Origin & Background

Reclaiming Roorkee's Historic Green Heart

Solani Park has historically been one of Roorkee's most valued public open spaces, positioned along the scenic Upper Ganga Canal belt. Over the past decade, however, neglect, accumulation of wild overgrowth, broken perimeter boundaries, unmanaged litter, and non-functional illumination rendered large sections of the park neglected and inaccessible for daily walkers, children, and senior citizens.

Built as a verdant civic retreat overlooking the engineering marvel of the Solani Aqueduct region, the park served as an iconic recreational oasis for residents across Roorkee and nearby educational communities. Preserving this ecological asset is vital for Roorkee's urban quality of life.

Community Importance

Public parks are not luxury amenities — they are vital civic sanctuaries essential for public mental and physical health, elder recreation, safe play areas for children, and ecological balance in an increasingly congested urban landscape.

Ground Reality

Civic Challenges Identified at Solani Park

Documented directly during on-site inspections with daily walkers and citizens.

Dense Unchecked Overgrowth & Safety Hazards

Unkempt thickets created blind spots, safety vulnerabilities for evening visitors, and pest infestations.

Condition Documented: Uncut brush and broken pathways obstructing walking routes.

Non-Functional Lighting & Broken Infrastructure

Lack of evening illumination forced women, elders, and families to avoid the park after sunset.

Condition Documented: Fallen lampposts, damaged benches, and vandalised fixtures.

Waste Accumulation & Neglected Water Features

Plastic litter and stagnant puddles compromised hygiene and created mosquito breeding spots.

Condition Documented: Absence of regular municipal clearance bins and maintenance staff.

Dilapidated Boundary Enclosures

Broken perimeter fencing allowed stray cattle entry and compromised civic property integrity.

Condition Documented: Gaps in boundary masonry and absent entry monitoring.
